08 August 2024 BI AGENTS NAB KOREAN FUGITIVE WANTED FOR COPYRIGHT VIOLATION IN PAMPANGA PAMPANGA, Philippines— Bureau of Immigration (BI) agents arrested in Pampanga a Korean man wanted by authorities in Seoul for marketing without permission a video streaming platform on the Internet in violation of his country’s copyright laws. In a statement, Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco said 55-year-old Kim Jongsik was arrested Aug. 6 at his residence in Bgy Sto Nino, Angeles City by operatives from the BI’s fugitive search unit (FSU). Tansingco said Kim is subject of an arrest warrant issued by the Busan district court in October 2022 when he was charged with violating Korea’s copyright act. A red notice on Kim was also issued by the Interpol the following month as a result of his criminal indictment, the BI chief added. He is now detained at the BI custodial facility in Camp Bagong Diwa, Taguig City where he will remain until he is deported. Tansingco bared that Kim was already ordered expelled by the BI last year when he was issued a summary deportation order by the bureau’s board of commissioners for being an undesirable alien. According to the BI-Interpol, Kim operated a Korean-language streaming service in the Philippines since 2013 which offered movies and entertainment shows that were obtained without the permission of its copyright owners in Korea. Subscribers to the said illegal streaming platform were allegedly charged a fee of P4,000 every three months. Kim has been banned from re-entering the Philippines as a consequence of his inclusion in the immigration blacklist. A check of his travel record showed that he last arrived in the country on April 18, 2019 and did not departed since then.
